PAUL BASSEY APPOINTED AS NEW CHAIRMAN OF AKWAUTD
Governor Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom state has announced the appointment of Paul Bassey as the new chairman of the board and management of Akwa United football club. This was contained in a statement signed by Aniekan Umanah, the state commissioner for Information and Communications, and made available to The Nation.
Udom on Tuesday, March 1, also dissolved the interim board and management of the Uyo-based team. Bassey’s appointment, according to the statement, takes immediate effect and would last for three months.
Akwa United, one of Nigeria’s representatives in the CAF Confederation Cup, on Saturday, February 27, in Uyo crashed out of the competition after losing on penalty shootout.

Bassey said Akwa United was a scapegoat to all the Nigerian clubs playing on the continent this season. “It is most unfortunate that they have to crash out of the competition this way,’’ he said. Before his appointment, Bassey was Akwa United’s media consultant. Paul Bassey, was in November 2015, designated by football’s world governing body, FIFA, as match commissioner for the 2018 World Cup qualifying cracker between the Red Devils of Congo and Walya Antelopes of Ethiopia in Brazzaville.
